Often referred to as the art of placement, Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese system of spatial arrangement. How you place the furniture and décor in a room, even how you select the colors for the room will determine whether the space will exude balance, comfort and harmony. As DuChâteau’s resident flooring expert, I believe hardwood floors are most certainly a part of this discussion. I cannot underscore enough the importance of laying your hardwood floors in a way that appeals to not just your sensibility, but the flow of the room. A great many interior designers and architects believe there truly is an energy flow to a space and you need to design for it.
When laying hardwood floors, specific layouts become very important in channeling and strengthening the flow of Chi, or energy, throughout your space. Conversely, a poorly chosen one will block the energy flow and create areas of stagnation. In general, there are a few flooring layout choices in which the floor runs 1) across the width of the room, 2) across the length, 3) diagonally with a 45-degree placement, and lastly, 4) in a parquetry pattern — the most intricate option with its sophisticated tile designs. It is recommended when entering a room with hardwood floors, the direction of the boards lead you into a room continuing a positive flow of energy into the space.
Just make sure that once you pick your layout, choose a floor color that will make your flooring “talk” harmoniously with the color of the walls, furnishings, etc. Colors can be from the same color family, or in direct contrast for a strong design statement, but not jarring by any means.

As you can see, there are many ways to lay your hardwood floors, but in order for it to be in line with Feng Shui, you’ll have to work with the other elements in your home to determine which layout works best for you.
